For Halloween, the hubs and I decided to go to my fashion spirit animal for inspiration. Thus, the Ladies Gaga stomped through NYC on Halloween like a team platinum-haired Clydesdale's. We out-Gaga-ed them all! To do her justice, you can't just slap on a blonde wig and a leotard and call it a day. Go hard or go home, bitches. For D., I constructed an elaborate bubble costume based on the one she wore on Saturday Night Live.
We decided this was the best route, seeing as D. wasn't feeling doing just a straight-up dress. So, I embarked on a DIY Couture Bubble Costume adventure. I started with a nude leotard from American Apparel which forced me to trek to an AA near me and ask, "Excuse me, do you have this nude leotard in an extra large?" and when they replied "no", they were out, but "surely you could take a medium or large", which is when I was obliged to explain that it was in fact for my husband.
Next step, bubbles. I searched high and low on the internet for these elusive bubbles. I finally decided to use acrylic fillable ornaments from Sunshine Discount Crafts in beautiful Tampa, FL! When the lady over the phone inquired about my need for 50 iridescent fillable ornaments overnighted to Brooklyn, I informed her that they were for my husband's Lady Gaga costume that I was hand-sewing in time for Halloween, which tickled her to no end. I then had to assemble and glue together over 50 of the little buggers. Then, I had to hand-sew them to the leotard. I am more than a little proud of myself...can you tell?
There are probably lots of photos of us floating around on the internet because everywhere we went on Halloween, people were asking to take pictures of us. Being fame whores, we happily obliged. Here are some photos of our outfits:
I made the hair-bow by shopping up another blonde wig, using hair ties to to fasten it, then bobby pinning it to a better wig. Is it wrong that I just want to wear it all the time now?!
So there you have it, the Ladies Gaga. D. has had his fix of cross-dressing for a long, long time and I have had my fill of wearing leotards in public. Happy (Belated) Halloween!
