I've always loved vintage clothing, ever since I was a little girl playing in my grandmother's closet. She had chiffon, satin, silk in sherbet, seafoam and baby blue. Bejeweled necklines and cuffs, matching jackets and jewelry. My sister and I used to crave the time when we could visit our Aunt Chloe, who had one of the best dress up closets I'd ever seen, full of debutante dresses from the 50's and evening gowns from social events. We, at 10 years old, fit into them fairly well, which says something about the emphasis on a slender physique (and the willingness of doctors in the 50's and 60's to prescribe speed for weight loss...).
I have a strange feeling like I should have been born in another time, a time with gloves and crinolines and hats. So when D. and I started watching the first season of Mad Men on bluray, I was riveted. Truth be told, I'm jealous! Yes, I know, women have since been liberated from the confines of girdles, slips under skirts, and hosiery (for the most part). Things have gotten more, how do we say....comfortable. As in, leggings for pants. Or sweatpants outside of the gym. Well, I've had enough! I want twin sets! Pencil skirts! Stockings with the seam down the back and GARTERS! I am utterly obsessing over this show and I think I must have a full on costume party to celebrate the new season. Men, you better find some Brill cream. Ladies, I expect coifs! Please?
